Welcome to our very first Member Spotlight – Member of the Month! For those of you that don’t wake up early, this is Micah, he attends the 6am class and brings a great attitude every day! He is one of the many reasons this community is so great; always encouraging others, trying and building new movements, and participates in gym events with his adorable family in tow. His next greatest adventure…a team competition in November with three other CFG members (Heather, Ali, & Daniel). See his story below of how he got started in CrossFit!

My CrossFit journey started in October of 2015. My reasons for joining CrossFit aren’t that exciting. I knew I needed to do something and I had been looking at various gym memberships and options when I came across a Groupon for 3 months at CFG. I snatched it up and was hooked. I think my story starts in a very similar way that most people looking for better health does. I was and am overweight and had been for my entire life, especially my college and adult life. I’ve always been one of those people who could retain a decent about of muscle so I always felt strong but I couldn’t get over the extra weight. My most successful stints with a gym or working out only lasted a few months so I was hopeful that I could find something I could stick with. I had friends who had and are members of CF gyms but I wasn’t too keen on the cult like stigma associated with it. I stumbled across a Groupon for CFG, which I decided to try. The Groupon was a 3 month commitment and I figured I could do that. I got to my first day and started elements. A week in, I was so sore that I could barely move, but I kept going. What happened over that first 3 months was amazing. I found myself waking up every morning at 5:30 without fail; I was going 3-4 times a week. I was really amazed. I wasn’t so much amazed at my progress but I was amazed that I kept going. At the time Ginger and Jason were my primary coaches. I felt accountability every day to get up and go. I met Ben and Mike in those first 3 months and it just became our daily “meeting”. Months turned into years and gym friends became real friends. I joined CFG to improve my health, and I did, but what I found was a family. It was one of the best decisions of my life.

My primary goals moving forward are to be able to do all of the WODs RX. I am deficient in some exercises, like DUs, HSPUs, Pull ups and Rope Climbs. I used to want to be able to increase my 1RM for all lifts and I still do but I am more focused on being able to do all the exercises now. Barbell movements are my favorites. Of those, I like cleans and *gasp* thrusters.
